Polar bear undergoes root canal
Author: teddygirl | Monday January 22, 2007
Koda, one of two polar bears at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, had a root canal last week. Koda, who is 2 years old, came with his brother Nuka from the Denver Zoo to the new polar bear exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo. The bears weigh around 600 pounds but are expected to grow to 1,600 pounds in the future.
Zookeepers noticed Koda’s dental problem last month and believe he may have hurt his tooth playing with his brother. The doctors who performed the root canal, Dr. Tom Klein and Dr. David Regine, had to improvise because human dental tools were not large enough for the bear.
