Senators vote no to Arctic drilling
Author: teddygirl | Friday December 30, 2005
Attempts to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge were rejected in the Senate. The 1.5 million acre refuge is home to polar bears, caribou, musk oxen and birds. Sen. Ted Stevens from Alaska, a proponent of this bill, has been pushing for Arctic drilling for many years.
The proposal would have required the Interior Department to issue its first oil leases within 22 months and additional leases in 2010. Oil was not expected to flow before 2015.
The proposal was attached to a $453.5 billion Defense Appropriations bill that included $29 billion for hurricane relief, the war and border security.
Many people feel this issue will resurface again next year.
