2002 Disney Doll and Teddy Bear Convention Review #2
Author: chrissie | Thursday December 19, 2002

This is about the Doll and Teddy Bear Convention from the perspective of a teddy bear collector.

What a beary special weekend! I went to the Disney Doll and Teddy Bear Convention this weekend along with 299 of my closest friends. There were 48 booths of teddy bear and doll (surprisingly, people collect other things besides teddy bears) artists. The event went from Friday to Sunday, but I only attended Friday and Saturday, which was for package holders only. Sunday was open to the public.

Friday

Most of the day was reserved for registration and enjoying Epcot. During registration guests randomly selected their number to stand in line to get in on Saturday morning. That night I went to the Artist/Guest Social, where guests met with the artists. Guests got to look at the bears and dolls including the limited edition and auction pieces. Some artists only had limited edition pieces and/or auction pieces while some had both of those along with other items from their collection. The night was only for looking and not buying. After the social, guests got to watch Illuminations, an awesome fireworks and laser show over the lagoon, from a private area in front of the Italy pavilion. The worst part of the weekend came next: deciding which bears to buy the next day!

Saturday

This was the day to buy! There were 3 shopping experiences. On the first one guests were limited to buying 1 limited edition piece per artist. On the second one guests could buy 2 limited edition pieces per artist. On the third one guests could buy whatever they wanted. I was lucky to get #42 out of 300. Guests could begin lining up at 9 am for the opening at 10 am. A Disney cast member gave each guest a giant bag when they walked in the building. Guests were anxious and excited and wished each other luck. Then the doors opened. Some guests walked fast and others ran. I threw the bears I wanted in my bag and got the artists to mark my sheet to show I had one limited edition piece. Needless to say, I didn’t waste any time going from booth to booth. After getting all the pieces I wanted, I went to the cashier to pay. My purchases: Scooter and his New Skates by Sue Coe (Bear Feet), Micky and Florian by Maude and John Blackburn (Canterbury Bears), Hermann Standing Bear with Tigger by Traudel Mischner (Hermann Teddy Original), Cheeky the Pooh by Jacqueline Revitt and Oliver Holmes (Merrythought), Micky Muffy by Barbara Isenberg (North American Bear Co.) and Margarete from Steiff. Guests received a Doll and Teddy Bear Convention pin for each bear they bought. After the first round, guests lined up for the artist area or for the Disney logo store. After the second round, guests could buy as many pieces as they liked.

Lunch started at 12:30 and Micky, Minnie, Donald and others greeted guests while they ate. At 1:30 I attended a workshop by Mari and Akemi Koto of Koto Bears where 20 guests made a Christmas bear. That was my first time I made a bear and I had a lot of fun. I think I increased sales of Band-Aids that day. I don't believe any bear factories will be offering me a job. I definitely have a new appreciation for artists and manufacturers. At 2 there was a seminar for all guests by Joan Greene, who wrote "In Search of Teddy." At 3:30 the live auction began. 36 doll and teddy bear lots were auctioned. Merrythought’s Cheeky the Pooh went for about $7,000 and Steiff’s workshop of Richard from an old photo (a larger version of the one in stores now) sold for about $10,000. At 8:15 guests enjoyed special seating at the Candlelight Processional, which is a retelling of the Christmas story with a choir and an orchestra.

Overall, the weekend was an experience to remember. Disney knows how to make teddy bear and doll lovers happy.
